Co-Dependency: What Is It?

The word “co-dependent” in general is used to describe a person who is affected by someone’s alcoholism or other chemical dependency. Many professionals in the field of addiction understand that co-dependency can emerge from every family system with rules that interfere with normal emotional, spiritual and behavioral growth. These rules discourage healthy interactions and eventually can destroy a person’s ability to trust others and themselves.

Some common problems for co-dependents:

-Difficulty to be accurate in identifying feelings … “Depressed, sad or disappointed?”

-Expressing feelings is very difficult. Keeping them private to avoid confrontations or being misunderstood.

-Expectations for self or others are often unrealistic.

-Behavior and/or attitudes can be very rigid.

-Adjustment to change is very difficult for co-dependents.

The list goes on. No wonder that co-dependents stay with their partners even in the face of severe abuse. No surprise that it can take a life-time for some to recover and change their behavior.

Closing Thoughts:

Many co-dependents never manage to break free! Yet there is so much hope nowadays. Specially trained professionals can guide a co-dependent to a better future and help them on their road of recovery.
